What is Boat Shipping Services?

Boat auto transport is a professional service that moves boats from one place to another. Like, small jet skis, sailboats, fishing boats, and large yachts. Specialized trailers, equipment, and carriers are used to safely handle different boat sizes and types. The process follows state, federal, and international transport laws.

Example: A 30-foot Boston Whaler was shipped from San Diego, California, to Lake Havasu, Arizona. A custom fitted bunk trailer is used to keep the boat stable and fully supported during the entire trip.

How much is it to haul a boat?

The cost to ship a boat via land ranges from $1.50 to $15 per mile. Boat shipping prices depend upon boat size,  distance, shipping method, fuel prices, oversize permit, urgent services.

  •  Small boat (under 20 ft): $2 to $3.50 per mile

Shipping from Miami to Atlanta costs around $1500 for 660 miles.

  •  Medium boat (20–30 ft): $2.50 to $5.00 per mile

To ship from San Diego to Denver costs around $3000 for 1060 miles.

  •  Large boat (30–40 ft): $1.00 to $4.00

For example, a 40 ft boat transported from Florida to Massachusetts cost approximately $6000 plus mast work. The final price depends on a number of factors, like distance and shipping method.

For instance, shipping a boat from Dallas, TX to Miami, FL costs approximately $3,250 using an open trailer at an average rate of $2.50 per mile. The distance is about 1,300 miles. With an enclosed trailer, the cost is around $4,225 for the same route.

What factors affect the cost of shipping a boat

There are several factors that affect the cost of shipping boats:

Boat size: It is the primary factor that affects cost. Larger and heavier boats cost more, as they also need permits and escort vehicles.

Distance: Longer distances cost more, while shorter distances cost less.

Shipping method: Cost is affected by the method you choose to ship, whether it is lowboy, gooseneck, flat rack, or enclosed trailer.

Fuel price: Fluctuation in fuel price affects shipping price.

Seasonality: Peak season impacts cost.

Oversize boat permit: Bulky ships require a permit that incurs additional fees.

Explicit shipping: urgent shipping is higher in price.

Insurance: Extra coverage insurance costs more than standard coverage.

How Long Does Boat Shipping Take?

Boat shipping typically takes 1 to 7 days for local transport. For cross-country or international shipments, delivery ranges from 2 to 6 weeks, depending on customs processing and port clearance.

Domestic Shipping:
Short Distances (1–3 days):
Example: Tampa, Florida, to Savannah, Georgia (250 miles) takes approximately 2 days.
Long Distances (3–7 days):
Example: San Diego, California, to Galveston, Texas (1,800 miles) takes around 5 days.

International Shipping:
Short Routes (2–3 weeks):
Example: Miami, Florida, to Nassau, Bahamas (1,200 miles) takes about 3 weeks.
Long Routes (4–6 weeks):
Example: New York City to Barcelona, Spain (6,500 miles by cargo ship) typically takes 5 weeks.

Expedited Shipping Services:
Expedited shipping provides faster delivery than standard options. It is used for urgent shipments and gives priority handling during dispatch.
For example, a Regal boat shipping from Charleston, South Carolina, to Houston, Texas (1,200 miles), takes:
Standard delivery: 5 days, approx. $2,800
Expedited delivery: 3 days, approx. $4,200

Expedited service has drivers working in shifts. They make fewer stops, which leads to faster delivery. This option is available at a higher rate due to the specialized logistics involved.

What Are the Different boat transportation Methods We Offer?

Each boat requires a transport method customized to its size, destination, and value. We offer four main shipping methods: Overland Boat Transport, Roll-On/Roll-Off (RoRo) Boat Shipping, Container Boat Shipping, and Flat Rack Boat Transport.

Overland Boat Transport

Overland boat shipping is a land based method that uses trailers and trucks to move boats. We use lowboy trailers, flatbeds, and lift and cradle systems to move boats on land. It is best for short domestic yacht shipping or dock-to-dock transfers.
Example: A 19-foot Bay liner Bowrider was hauled from Nashville, Tennessee, to Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, for a summer boating event. Using a bunk trailer with cradle support, the vessel was securely transported overland and arrived ready to hit the water.

Roll-On/Roll-Off (RoRo) Boat Shipping

RoRo boat shipping is an affordable international shipping method. The boat rolls on and rolls off the boat without disassembly. onto a ship’s deck by means of built-in ramps. Perfect for large-volume shipments.
Example: A 35-foot Jeanneau sailboat is shipping from Jacksonville, Florida, to Southampton, UK. The transport team uses the Roll-On/Roll-Off method. Workers load the vessel onto the ship’s deck using ramps. They secured it with straps and rolled it off without incident upon arrival.

Container Boat Shipping

Container shipping is a protective method. It gives extra protection to your boat from the weather and theft. We place your boat inside a secure metal container of 20 ft to 40 ft. This is ideal for jet skis, dinghies, and small fishing boats.

Example: A 16-foot Boston Whaler Montauk is shipped from Norfolk, Virginia, to Los Angeles, California, inside a 20-foot container. The enclosed transport protected the boat from harsh weather and damage during the cross-country journey.

Flat Rack Boat Transport

When your boat is oversized for a standard container, Flat rack transport is the solution. We place the vessel on a rack to secure it for the cargo ship. They are open platforms used for wide or tall boats. Boats are secured on the flat rack by using straps and then loaded on a trailer or ship.

Example: A 32-foot Grady-White Express was transported from Miami, Florida, to Seattle, Washington, using flat rack shipping. The boat was securely strapped to the open platform.

Does Nexgen Provide Boat Insurance?

Yes, we offer full insurance coverage for damage, accidents, and theft. While such incidents are rare, unexpected events can still happen. Every shipment includes up to $500,000 in liability insurance. All documentation is provided before transport for your complete peace of mind.

What Payment Methods Are Available?

We offer secure payment methods, including credit cards, Zelle, PayPal, Cash App, Wise, and Venmo. But only after a carrier is assigned to your shipment. You never pay upfront. We charge only when your boat or vehicle is officially scheduled for pickup. Trust us for stress-free billing and premium service on every transport.

Are There Any Cancellation Fees?

No, there are no cancellation fees if you cancel within 24–48 hours of booking. However, once a carrier is assigned, a small scheduling fee of $50–$100 applies. This is because the carrier has already planned the route, reserved a spot for your boat, and adjusted their schedule around your shipment.

If you back out at this stage, that spot stays empty, and other shipments could have been delayed to accommodate yours. To avoid this, we call before arranging the carrier to confirm your plans and give you a chance to reconsider.

RoRo, container shipping, and flat rack are most common. RoRo is budget-friendly for self-powered boats. Containers protect smaller boats. A flat rack is best for wide or tall vessels that need special handling.

Pedal boats are typically transported via open or enclosed trailers. They are secured with straps and covered for protection. We drain all the water and secure pedals before loading.

Firearms must be unloaded, locked in a case, and stored in a compartment per U.S. Coast Guard and local laws. They cannot be accessed while in transit.

For small boats, enclosed container shipping gives top security and care. For large boats, a licensed hauler with air-ride trailers and a proper tie-down system that minimizes risk.

Place it on a padded flatbed or enclosed carrier. Use foam supports to protect the hull and secure it tightly with straps. Cover the boat with shrink wrap to protect it from weather and road debris during transport.

To transport a boat lift, start by disassembling it into manageable parts. Load the pieces onto a flatbed truck for transport. If the lift is large or heavy, it needs a crane for loading and special permits for oversized loads
To transport an inflatable boat, you can use a lightweight trailer or a roof rack. You can simply deflate and fold it for easier handling. The best freight method depends on your boat's size and how far you need to travel.

To transport a boat motor, start by draining all fuel and fluids to prevent leaks or hazards during transit. Next, securely pack the motor in a foam-lined crate to protect it from damage. Clearly label the crate as “fragile” so our team takes extra care. Full value insurance is given in case of loss or damage. You can transport the motor separately as freight or ship it along with the boat.

During WWII, Higgins boats were stacked on LSTs (Landing Ships). They were loaded using cranes on the decks of bigger ships. They were also loaded onto trucks to move them to ports before going overseas for battle.
