What is Car transport insurance?
Auto transport insurance is a contract that safeguards your vehicle. It covers damage or loss during shipping by a carrier. This insurance covers risks like accidents, theft, or weather-related damage during transit. All FMCSA-licensed car carriers must carry liability and cargo insurance. Coverage limits vary by company and transport type. Enclosed shipping often provides higher coverage than open carriers.
Who Is Eligible for Vehicle Insurance Coverage?
All customers who book a shipment with NexGen Auto Transport are eligible for vehicle insurance coverage. Eligibility kicks in when a licensed FMCSA carrier from our network moves your vehicle.
To qualify for insurance benefits, you must:
- Have a signed Bill of Lading (BOL) for your shipment.
- Pay for your transport in full or as agreed upon in your contract.
- Disclose the accurate condition of your vehicle before pick-up.
- Remove or secure all personal items, as the policy excludes them from coverage.
- Follow all terms in your shipping agreement.
This coverage protects your vehicle from physical damage while in the carrier’s possession. It won’t cover damage from poor preparation, personal belongings in the car, or mechanical issues not linked to shipping.

If you have questions about your eligibility, contact NexGen Auto Transport before your shipment date. Our team will review your booking and confirm that your transport meets all insurance requirements.
How Do I File a Claim If My Vehicle Is Damaged?
If your vehicle arrives with damage, follow these steps right away:
- Inspect Your Car: Before Signing the Bill of Lading Check your vehicle carefully. Look for scratches, dents, or broken parts. Take clear, date-stamped photos from all sides.
- Note All Damage on the Bill of Lading Write every issue you see on the delivery Bill of Lading before signing. This document is proof of the vehicle’s condition at arrival.
- Notify NexGen Auto Transport right away. Call our claims department or car dispatch team on the same day you get the car. Early notification helps process your claim faster.
- Submit Documentation Email us photos of the damage, the signed Bill of Lading, and any repair estimates you have. Keep copies of everything for your records.
- Wait for Claim Review and Approval. The insurance company will check your claim details. They may send an adjuster or request more information.
- Receive Payment or Repair Authorization If approved, you will receive payment for repairs. If not, you’ll get instructions on how to proceed.
Important Note:
- You must file claims within 7 days of delivery.
- Damage to personal items inside the vehicle is not covered.
- Inspect the vehicles at delivery to ensure eligibility.
Are Personal Items in My Car Covered by Insurance?
No. Personal items left inside your car are not covered by auto transport insurance. Insurance only protects the vehicle itself against damage during shipping.
Important Details:
- Personal belongings, including electronics, tools, clothes, and furniture, are excluded from coverage.
- If these items hurt your vehicle, such as breaking windows or scratching the inside, the damage may not be covered.
- Transporting personal items can delay delivery or result in extra fees.
Tip: Always remove all personal items before shipping. This ensures the safety of your vehicle and keeps your insurance valid.
What’s the Difference Between Open and Enclosed Transport Insurance?
Open vehicle transport insurance protects your vehicle when it’s on an open car carrier trailer. This method protects against accidental damage but leaves your car exposed to weather and road debris. At NexGen Auto Transport, open carrier shipments include up to $250,000 in coverage.
Enclosed car transport insurance provides higher protection. Your vehicle is fully covered in a sealed trailer that shields it from rain, dust, and impact. Enclosed and door-to-door shipments offer coverage up to $500,000. This makes them great for luxury, classic, or high-value vehicles.
Do I Need to Pay a Deductible for a Damage Claim?
In most cases, you do not need to pay a deductible when you file a damage claim with NexGen Auto Transport. If damage happens during transport and it meets insurance requirements, the carrier’s policy covers repair costs.
Important Notes:
You must document the damage on the Bill of Lading at delivery.
Claims for damage from personal items, old problems, or bad preparation aren’t eligible.
Always confirm with your transport coordinator if your specific shipment has a deductible clause.
What Items Are Prohibited in My Vehicle During Shipping?

- Flammable liquids (fuel cans, propane tanks, chemicals)
